Michael Hengartner (born 1966) is the Rector of the University of Zurich. He was recruited to Zurich in 2001 to become the first occupant of the Ernst Hadorn endowed professorship at the University of Zurich (UZH). In 2009 he became dean of UZH’s Faculty of Science. Michael’s research focuses on the pathways that lead to programmed cell death – knowledge that will be critical in fighting cancer. Michael recently received an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonne as well as from the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, for his research into molecular biology and his contributions to science.
