Walter Thurnherr is the Federal Chancellor of Switzerland. Walter graduated in 1987 in Theoretical Physics from ETH Zurich. A career diplomat, he has held several positions within the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) from 1989 to 2003, which included postings in Bern and Moscow. He was appointed ambassador and Head of the Consular Directorate in May 2000. From June 2002 until January 2003, Walter was Secretary-General of the FDFA. From February 2003 until the end of 2010, he was Secretary-General of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research. In January 2011 he was appointed Secretary-General of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. Walter is married and has two children. Besides his career, Walter is passionate about running, skiing, and doing nothing, always with friends.
